TITLECommunication Techniques for Defining Project Stakeholder Expectations

DATE:  May 29, 2019

OVERVIEW:  Project success is predicated on understanding exactly the expectations of project stakeholders early in the project life-cycle. Failure to clearly define these expectations upfront, will result in changes during the project life-cycle and can put success at risk. Clear communication between the project manager and stakeholder(s) is critical during this process.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:  All Members, non-members and guests

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN:  Many times, stakeholders have not had to clearly define and write down their expectations, so project managers must spend time helping the stakeholder(s) define their expectations. This could be due to lack of research into requirements or technology, not understanding the process or lack of time itself. During this effort, communication techniques are required to achieve success. John C. Maxwell says “Everyone Communicates, but Few Connect.” By connecting with the stakeholder(s), they develop a trust and respect that allows openness and improves communications. Understanding the stakeholder(s) communication tendencies, based upon their personality, allows project managers to ask better questions and thus achieve better results.
